In focus: PROM for psychiatry and psychosomatic medicine

Highly standardized patient assessments have been a fundamental pillar of mental health care and research for decades — in fact, patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) were likely in widespread use in this field long before they were even labeled as such (Steinbeck, Ernst, Burger, Pruss: Nutzung von Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) im deutschsprachigen Raum, 2022). Nevertheless, improvements in data entry systems continue to present key challenges (Gelkopf, Mazor, Roe: International Journal for Quality in Health Care, 34, 2021).

With MAIA, patient surveys can be efficiently integrated into mental health care. Depending on the clinic’s needs, we set up data collection pathways that allow for both individual assessments and entire sets of measures to be gathered in a largely automated fashion. This includes multi-point assessments, such as those accompanying long-term therapies or ongoing medication. The analysis, score visualization, and trend tracking can be largely automated and presented in a clear and accessible way for clinical staff or researchers, with options for easy data export.

Mental health PROMs (interdisciplinary)

MAIA’s ePRO platform can usually be set up with the assessment tools needed in each clinic or outpatient service. Here's an example list of PROMs that are commonly used in mental health:

Mental health (interdisciplinary)

  • PHQ-9 (Patient Health Questionnaire-9): Assessment of depressive symptoms and severity. The PHQ-9 has become a standard tool in many clinical settings.
  • GAD-7 (Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7):Screening tool for detecting anxiety disorders.
  • WHO-5 (Well-Being Index): Brief tool for assessing mental well-being and depression.
  • EQ-5D:Tool for assessing health-related quality of life; commonly used in medical research and health economics due to its simplicity, time efficiency, and international comparability.
  • CORE-OM (Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation): Measurement of psychological distress, well-being, and risk in everyday clinical practice, particularly for evaluating psychotherapy or counseling progress.

Psychiatry

  • BPRS (Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale): Captures the severity of psychiatric symptoms such as anxiety, depression, delusions, or hallucinations using 18–24 items; commonly used for schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders.
  • PANSS (Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale): Questions on the assessment, evaluation, and progression of positive and negative symptoms, as well as general psychopathology in schizophrenia.
  • YSQ-S3 (Young Schema Questionnaire, shortform):  Assessment of dysfunctional schemas (persistent
dysfunctional patterns of emotions, cognition, and bodily sensations; schema therapy).

Psychosomatic medicine

  • FSS (Fatigue Severity Scale): Measures the subjective level of fatigue and its impact on daily life and quality of life. Especially relevant for patients with chronic conditions
  • PDI (Pain Disability Index): Assesses pain-related impairment across various areas of life such as work, leisure, and social activities, and helps determine the level of functional severity in patients with chronic pain.
  • PSQ (Perceived Stress Questionnaire): Captures perceived stress, distinguishing between positive and negative emotions, tension, and everyday demands.
